Hatters Split on Final Day of Seminole Beach Blast

Stetson defeats No. 7 Cal Poly 3-2

Tallahassee, Fla. -- No. 9 Stetson split its final two matches at the Seminole Beach Bash Sunday, defeating seventh-ranked Cal Poly 3-2 before falling to Houston Baptist by the same score.

The Hatters concluded their opening weekend with a 3-2 mark with two victories over Top 20 opponents.

In a matchup between two NCAA Championship participants from a year ago, Stetson took a 1-0 lead over Cal Poly when Carly Perales and Sunniva Helland-Hansen won 21-19, 21-11 at the 1 seed.  After the Mustangs tied the dual at the 3 seed, Ana Costa and Kyce Martins gave the Hatters a 2-1 advantage with a 23-21, 21-4 victory at the 2 seed.

With Pair 4 and Pair 5 going to third sets, Rebecca Ingram and Quinci Birker clinched the match for the Hatters with a 21-14, 17-21, 15-9 win at the 4 seed.

It was Stetson's fifth Top 10 victory dating back to last season.  The Hatters also defeated No. 16 TCU on Saturday.

Against Houston Baptist, the Hatters got 2-0 wins from both Costa and Martins at the 2 seed and from Kamryn Johnson and Madison Bobes at the 5 seed, but the Huskies won at the 1, 3, and 4 seeds to secure the match.

The loss snapped Stetson's 63-game winning streak against unranked opponents.

Costa and Martins went a perfect 5-0 in their matches to start the season.

The Hatters will host the Stetson Spring Fling next weekend at the Cooper Beach Courts.
