Diawara, Perry Named Freshman All-Americans

Stetson's Mahamadou Diawara and Rob Perry have been named to the Kyle Macy Freshman All-America Team.

The Kyle Macy Freshman All-America Team is comprised of the top 30 freshmen at all levels of Division I basketball. Diawara and Perry are the only representatives from the ASUN Conference.

Diawara and Perry are the first Hatters named to the team since Derick Newton in 2016.

Diawara started 30 of 31 games for the Hatters during his freshman season, averaging 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. The 6-10 center/forward also shot 58.5 percent from the field on his way to earning a spot on the ASUN All-Freshman team.

Diawara scored in double figures 22 times. His top game was a 28-point, 12-rebound effort against eventual ASUN runner-up North Florida.

Perry, who earlier this week was named to the NABC All-District first team, is the 2020 ASUN Conference Freshman of the Year. He led the Hatters in scoring at 15.1 points per game while also topping the conference in 3-point field-goal percentage (.426).

Perry set a Stetson freshman record by making 69 three-pointers. He also averaged 5.1 rebounds per game and scored 20 or more points eight times.

Perry burst onto the scene in early November when he scored a Stetson freshman record 34 points in the Hatters' 77-75 win at Western Illinois.

He was selected as ASUN Newcomer of the Week on four different occasions.

Georgia's Anthony Edwards was named Freshman of the Year.

The award and team are named for Macy, the 1975 Indiana "Mr. Basketball," who played his freshman season at Purdue University, averaging 13.8 points per game while leading the Boilermakers in free throws (85.9 percent for the season). He started in 25 of 27 games, helping them to a 16-11 season record.

After playing his freshman year at Purdue, Macy transferred to Kentucky in 1976. He started every game for the Wildcats in 1977. A three-time All-America and three-time All-SEC player, Macy was a member of Kentucky's 1978 National Championship team. In his senior year of 1979-80, he became the first Kentucky player ever to be named consensus Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.
