Hatters Make West Coast Trip to California

Stetson to Face Five Ranked Opponents

DeLand, Fla. -- The 10th-ranked Stetson Hatters (6-3) will travel to California this weekend to compete at the Pepperdine Waves Invite and the LMU Invitational. The Hatters will play five consecutive matches against fellow ranked opponents during the trip.

"Obviously, it's an opportunity for us to make some moves," Stetson head coach Kristina Hernandez said, "so it's really just us looking at it as wanting that opportunity and seeing it as a good challenge."

The Hatters will begin the weekend with two duals Saturday at Zuma Beach in Malibu.  Stetson will face #14 Long Beach State at 1:15 p.m. ET and #9 Pepperdine at 2:30 p.m. ET.

The Hatters will play a tripleheader on Sunday at Oceans Beach Park in Santa Monica.  Stetson squares off against #15 South Carolina at 1 p.m. ET, #14 Long Beach State at 4:30 p.m. ET, and #8 Loyola Marymount at 6:15 p.m. ET.

Stetson will be making a West Coast trip for the fourth year in a row.  Last season, the Hatters went 2-2 while playing matches at Long Beach State and Southern Cal.

Hernandez says the Hatters are seeking more consistency throughout their lineup.  Through the first two weeks on the season, the No. 1 and 2 Pairs are a combined 16-2, while the No. 3, 4, and 5 Pairs are 12-15.

The Hatters have also battled through several close matches this season.  Five of the first nine duals have been decided by a 3-2 margin, and many of those matches have come down to the a final few points.

"We've been focusing on finishing sets and just taking care of our side and making sure we're making good decisions in those moments," Hernandez said.  "We have to understand what our strengths are in those points and attack the game in that manner. It's about taking risks, but taking risks with what you're really good at and really confident in so that you can go for those big plays."
