Hatters Down FAU 3-1 in Season Opener

Elena Djokovic goes for 22 and 17 in a career night

DeLand, Fla. -- Sophomore Elena Djokovic registered career-highs of 22 kills and 17 digs to lead Stetson to a 3-1 season-opening victory over Florida Atlantic Sunday evening at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (1-0) won by scores of 25-20, 16-25, 25-19 and 25-20 to earn their first victory over the Owls (0-2) since 2002.

Djokovic was a force from start to finish, taking 58 swings and hitting at a .224 clip.  She posted seven kills in the first set alone to get Stetson off to a 1-0 lead.

After FAU evened the match, the Hatters bounced back with a solid defensive effort over the final two sets.  Stetson collected four blocks each in the third and fourth frames, including a game-winning stuff by Kennedy Muldrow and Naina Ivanova to seal the victory.

Ivanova registered a double-double of 35 assists and 13 digs, while adding five blocks.

Stetson picked up 88 digs as a team, with Chelcie Spence leading the way (24 digs).  Djokovic (17), Ivanova (13), Grace Asleson (13), and Alejandra Perez (12) also collected double-digit digs.

The Hatters hit just .117 for the match but held FAU to a .091 mark.  

Stetson will open ASUN play on Feb. 12 at home vs. FGCU.

Notes:
  • The Hatters ended a 16-game drought to FAU dating back to 2002
  • Fresh out of isolation, Yamelis Mojica jumped into the match in the third set and finished with three blocks and a .385 attack pct. (6-1-13)
  • Stetson recorded 11 blocks as a team
  • Chelcie Spence has topped 20-dig mark 27 times in her career
  • Naina Ivanova recorded her 26th career double-double
  • Grace Asleson, Anabelle Standish and Yamelis Mojica made their Hatter debuts.
