The Stetson men's cross country team will compete at the FSU XC Invitational Friday morning at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla.

The 8K event will serve as the preview race for the 2021 National Championship in November. Over 60 programs from throughout the country will compete on the men's side in two separate races.  The Hatters will run in the Open Race beginning at 9:10 a.m.

"It's going to be set up like a championship," Stetson head coach Bryan Harmon said.  "You're going to have specific areas for team tents. You're going to have areas where parents and spectators aren't allowed to get to. You're going to have officials all over the course. You're going to have big video board at the finish line. You're going to have the announcer calls, so it's a little bit of a spectacle, but that's what nationals is.  That will be an adjustment, but it will be a fun adjustment.  It's going to be a great environment, and you hope the adrenaline's pumping even more during the race because of that atmosphere."

Senior Tristen Montalvo and juniors Parker Hines and Jakob McConnell have experience competing on the Apalachee Regional Park course.  Montalvo finished 44th at the NCAA Regional meet there in 2019.

"For somebody like Tristen who has big goals, this is the place where he's going to really get a chance to test himself," Harmon said.  "That's one of the reasons we're going to this race, so he can get a better idea of what it's going to take for him at the regional meet to potentially get to the national meet."

Friday will mark the third event of the season for the Hatters and the team's final tune-up before the ASUN Championship on Oct. 30.  Montalvo, Hines, McConnell, and freshman Fynn Mengele have been the consistent top four finishers for the Hatters this season.  Frank Bero, Clay Campbell, Patrick Pitts and Ashton Siwek are all looking to step up and be the team's fifth scorer.

"I'm excited," Harmon said.  "People are feeling good. The workout on Tuesday was amazing. Several people had their best workout of the year, and some others worked really well together, so we finally looked like a complete unit.  Hopefully that carries over to Friday, but even when we leave there, we want to know that we've made progress from the last time we raced, and then we want to know that we've got two more weeks to look like the product we all envisioned when the season started."

Stetson will be one of 41 men's programs competing in the Open Race.  Results will be available at PTTiming.com.
