UNF Holds Off Stetson in Five-Set Marathon

DeLand, Fla. -- The Hatters and Ospreys have had some remarkable head-to-head battles on the volleyball court over the past few seasons, but Saturday's tilt may have been the craziest one yet.

In a match that featured 33 ties, 14 lead changes, and a game time just shy of three hours, UNF outlasted Stetson 3-2 Saturday night in the Hatters' home finale at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (12-13, 7-6 ASUN) battled all the way back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set, but the Ospreys (21-4, 10-3) jumped out to 5-0 and 7-1 leads in the decisive frame before hanging on for a 15-11 victory.

"I told them I was very proud of how we played, of how we fought," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "We are still improving, and that's the most encouraging thing for our team."

Stetson freshman Nyah Molina put on a phenomenal defensive display, collecting 28 digs and three blocks to go along with 43 assists.  She is the first Stetson setter in the rally scoring era to record 28 digs in a match. It was her 19th double-double of the season and her ninth in a row.

Anabelle Standish also registered a double-double, finishing with 12 kills and 12 digs.  Elena Djokovic led the offense with 21 kills, while Kaylee Oscarson added 11.

Kennedy Muldrow was strong in the middle once again, collecting a career-high nine blocks.  Stetson recorded 14 blocks as a team. Alejandra Perez picked up 11 digs, including the 800th of her career.

Stetson outhit UNF .194 to .176.  Gaby O'Connell led the Ospreys with 15 kills.

Perez, along with fellow seniors Lindsey Leipold and Madison Baynard, were honored before the match.

The Hatters will play three more matches on the road before heading to the ASUN Conference Championship. Next, Stetson will visit Kennesaw State at 7 p.m. Friday.
