Hatters Come Up Big In Five-Set Win Over Liberty

Stetson dominates the fifth set to improve to 4-2 in ASUN play

DeLand, Fla. -- Behind a team school-record 21-block performance, Stetson defeated Liberty 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 25-27, 20-25, 15-6) Friday night in an ASUN Conference match at the Edmunds Center.

Alexis Thompson and Kaylee Oscarson combined for 15 blocks in the middle, while Nyah Molina registered 45 assists and 25 digs.

After letting a 2-0 lead slip away, the Hatters (9-9, 4-2 ASUN) dominated the final set to defeat Liberty at home for the first time.

"I am really proud of the way we came out in the fifth set," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said. "They had the choice to either be down on themselves or to just fight for it. That's the battle mentality I want them to have, I am really proud of how they finished it."

The Flames (6-6, 2-3) survived four match points in the third set.  Stetson led 24-20 with a chance to end the match in three, but Liberty rallied for a 27-25 win in the third and later a 25-20 win in the fourth.

Stetson led wire-to-wire in the fifth set, jumping out to a 4-0 and 6-2 lead. The dagger came on the 13th point when Elena Djokovic hammered a rocket from the back row after a spectacular dig and set from Alejandra Perez and Molina.

Stetson hit .316 in the final frame to improve to 3-0 in five set matches this season.

In addition to Thompson's eight blocks and Oscarson's seven, the Hatters got six blocks from Djokovic, including four solos, four from Molina, four from Yamelis Mojica, three from Anabelle Standish and two from Beatriz Vossen.  The 21 blocks smashed the old school record of 17.

"We've talked about blocking and we've worked on it at practice, and they just did it," Deng said.  "Everyone was in on it tonight."

Djokovic and Standish led the offense with 17 and 14 kills, respectively.  Djokovic (20 digs), Perez (18 digs), and Standish (10 digs) joined Molina in double figures in digs. Stetson committed just one service error in 110 service attempts.

The Hatters will go for the weekend sweep when they host Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. Saturday.
