Down But Not Out, Hatters Rally For Improbable Five-Set Win at Liberty

Stetson erases six-point fifth-set deficit

Lynchburg, Va. – Stetson delivered one its gutsiest efforts of the season Sunday, rallying from a late fifth set deficit and staving off three set points before securing a 3-2 victory over Liberty Sunday afternoon at Liberty Arena.

The Hatters trailed 2-1 in the match and 11-5 and 12-7 in the fifth frame before going on a 6-1 run to pull even at 13-13.  Liberty answered back and served for match point three times – at 14-13, 17-16 and 18-17 - but each time the Hatters stayed alive.  With the score tied at 18, Kaylee Oscarson's kill put the Hatters in front, and after a clutch one-handed dig by Anabelle Standish, Liberty attacked the ball into the net to end the match.

"I always tell them in the volleyball world, even if you are down six points, it happens," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "You can still win.  Everybody has to be on the same page. You have to fight to fight for it one point at a time, and they did."

The final set scores for Stetson were 25-20, 24-26, 20-25, 25-14, 20-18.

With the victory the Hatters (13-14, 8-7 ASUN) clinched the No. 4 seed in the ASUN East Division. Stetson will face the No. 1 seed in the West, Jacksonville State, in the first round of the ASUN Championship on Nov. 18.

In a match that lasted 2 hours and 58 minutes, the Hatters filled up the stat sheet in a total team effort. Standish led the way with career-highs of 17 kills, 14 digs and four blocks. Oscarson, who recorded a career-high 15 kills at Liberty in 2019, netted 14 kills, six blocks and a .414 attack percentage against the Flames on Sunday.

Elena Djokovic started the match slow, but came on late to record a 10-kill, 16-dig double-double.  She had three kills and five digs in the fifth set alone.

Nyah Molina, who had a diving game-saving dig on one of Liberty's match points, finished with 46 assists and 21 digs for her 11th consecutive double-double performance.

Alejandra Perez led the back row with 24 digs, while Kennedy Muldrow added seven kills and six blocks.

Trinity Watts led the Flames (9-12, 5-9 ASUN) with 19 kills.

As a team, the Hatters recorded a season-high 95 digs to go along with 15.5 blocks.  In two matches against Liberty this season, both 3-2 Hatter victories, Stetson compiled 182 digs and 36.5 blocks.

The Hatters will conclude the regular season at FGCU at 6 p.m. Saturday.
