Hatters set to host Point University

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team gets set to take on NAIA member school Point University on Thursday, Dec. 30 at the Edmunds Center. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

Stetson comes off a two-game stretch in which the Hatters went 1-1. After falling 82-72 on the road at University of Miami back on Dec. 20, the Hatters rebounded and topped NCAA Division III Piedmont University 97-53 on Dec. 22. Against the Hurricanes, Chase Johnston recorded 18 points on 6-of-11 from 3-point range, his third game of five or more 3-point field goals on the year. Stetson's 46 attempted 3-point field goals against Piedmont set a new record as the Hatters connected on 18 of them, one shy of tying the record for made 3-pointers in a game. 
 
Scouting the Skyhawks 
Point enters Thursday's contest with an 8-6 overall record and is 2-2 in the month of December. Point has won two straight games as the Skyhawks topped Johnson and Wales 94-72 back on Dec. 9 and then defeated Milligan 77-66 on Dec. 11. 
 
Point displays a balanced offense with four Skyhawk players averaging double figures as senior forward Corey Bowen leads Point with 15.2 points per game. Fellow seniors Lorenzo Freeman Jr. and Ray Reeves average 13.2 and 12.1 per game, respectively while junior RJ Selman has tallied 10.6 points a game thus far. As a team, the Skyhawks shoot 47.1 percent overall from the field and 32.3 percent from 3-point range. 
 
All-Time Series
Thursday afternoon's contest will be the first time that the Hatters and the Skyhawks will square off against each other. 
 
Scouting the Hatters
Stetson enters Thursday's match up with a 5-7 overall record as the Hatters come off a 1-1 stretch and are in the midst of their second three-game home stand this season. The Hatters have won three of their last four including an upset 67-59 win over College of Charleston back on Dec. 16. 
 
The Hatters also display a balanced offense paced by Stetson's top-three scorers in Johnston, Rob Perry, and Christiaan Jones. Perry leads the Hatters with 14.5 points per game while Johnston and Jones each average 12.9 and 11.9, respectively. Johnston and Jones have recorded double-figures in four-straight games as Stetson is 3-1 over those four contests. As a team, the Hatters have shot 44.4 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from 3-point range.
 
Looking Ahead
Thursday's matchup with Point is the Hatters final non-conference game of the season as Stetson begins ASUN Conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 4 when the Hatters host the Liberty University Flames. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
