Hatters Welcome Jacksonville For Weekend Tussle

Stetson men's basketball opens a four-game homestand this weekend when the Hatters welcome ASUN Conference foe and long-time rival Jacksonville to the Edmunds Center for a pair of games, beginning 7 p.m., Friday.

The teams will also meet at 5 p.m., Saturday. Both games can be seen on ESPN+.

The Hatters (8-11 overall, 5-7 ASUN) and Dolphins (10-12, 4-8) are separated by one game in the conference standing as the weekend begins. These games were originally scheduled to be played next weekend in Jacksonville, but recent schedule shuffling by the ASUN has the teams meeting now in DeLand.

Stetson split a pair of games last weekend at Kennesaw State as senior guard Christiaan Jones reached the 1,000-career point milestone with a fine all-round weekend performance. Jones averaged 17.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in two games, including a career-high 16 rebounds in Saturday's loss.

Jacksonville split a home series with Lipscomb last week. Newcomer Dontarius James leads the ASUN in scoring at 18.2 points per game.

Under the Hat
•Two freshmen are making an impact on the Stetson record book with just four regular season games remaining. Point guard Stephan Swenson all-time is 9th amongst Hatter freshmen with 66 assists, and Chase Johnston is third with 58 3-pointers. He needs 12 more to break Rob Perry's record of 69 set last season, and is 19 shy of besting Luke Doyle's school season record of 76 set in 2016-17.
•Johnston is also likely to crack the Freshman Scoring Top 10 before season's end as well. With 270 points, he needs 30 more to surpass Grant Lozoya for 10th.
•Stetson and Jacksonville will meet for the 92nd and 93rd time this weekend, in a series which dates back to 1958. JU is Stetson's longest-running current rivalry, as the Hatters and Dolphins have met every year since 1999. JU leads the all-time series, 55-36.
•Stetson and JU split the season series last year, with each team winning on the other's home court.
•Stetson's win at JU (64-59) snapped an 8-game losing streak to the Dolphins, and was Stetson's first win in Jacksonville since Feb. 19, 2006.
