Hatters Host Lipscomb as ASUN Schedule Enters Final Month

Stetson men's basketball begins the final month of the ASUN Conference season this weekend when the Hatters host Lipscomb for a pair of games, beginning 7 p.m., Friday, at Edmunds. The teams will also meet at 5 p.m., Saturday. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Hatters (6-9 overall, 3-5 ASUN) are looking to build some late-season momentum as they enter the weekend on the heels of consecutive wins.

Stetson closed last weekend with an impressive 77-66 win at FGCU as Rob Perry exploded for 30 points on his way to ASUN Player of the Week honors. On Monday, Stetson routed Carver, 110-56, setting a school record with 19 3-pointers.

Perry (14.5) leads the Hatters in scoring, while redshirt freshman Chase Johnston is second (13.8).

Lipscomb (11-8, 5-3) stepped out of ASUN play last weekend with an 89-56 win over Bluefield State. The Bisons are led by ASUN preseason player of the Year Ahsan Asadullah, who averages 12.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

Under the Hat
•This weekend's games are a battle between ASUN preseason No. 2 (Lipscomb) and No. 3 (Stetson). Both teams are still in the hunt for the ASUN regular-season title with four weeks left in the season.
•Rob Perry seems to have regained his swagger over the last three games, averaging 21.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting 67 percent (12-18) from 3-point range. This return to the norm comes after Perry was held scoreless for the first time in his career on Jan. 23 at Bellarmine. He was named ASUN Player of the Week on Monday after erupting for 30 points in Saturday's victory at FGCU.
•The Carver game also marked the return of forward Joel Kabimba, who has missed the previous six games for personal reasons. In 20 minutes, Kabimba scored 15 points and grabbed 4 boards.
•Freshman Josh Smith enjoyed the finest game of his young career on Jan. 23 at Bellarmine, scoring 24 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. He was 8 of 10 from the field, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range.
•Sophomore Rob Perry tied a school record at North Alabama by making 8 3-pointers in Stetson's 86-77 win. Perry now shares the record with Luke Doyle (vs. Florida Tech, 12/30/15) and Alex Urosevic (vs. Eckerd, 11/29/89).

About the Game
•Stetson and Lipscomb have met 39 times prior to this weekend, with the Bisons holding a 23-16 edge in the series. The teams split last season's meetings, with each team winning on the others' court. The Hatters have lost five straight home games to the Bisons, last defeating Lipscomb in DeLand, 75-73, on Jan. 31, 2015.
•Stetson's win in Nashville last February snapped an 8-game losing streak for the Hatters against the Bisons.
•Stetson hasn't defeated Lipscomb in the Edmunds Center since Jan. 31, 2015 (W, 75-73).
•This could be a milestone weekend for senior guard Christiaan Jones, who needs just 30 points to reach 1,000 for his career. When he does, Jones will become just the 36th player in program history to reach 1,000 points.
•The Hatters are still searching for their first weekend sweep of the season. Stetson has split three of its first four weekends, but has yet to win both games.
•The remainder of the ASUN schedule is a bit of an unknown at this point. The Hatters are scheduled to be off next weekend, before hosting Kennesaw State (2/19-20) and closing the regular season at Jacksonville (2/26-27). The schedule is expected to change, perhaps more than once, before the season ends.
