Johnston Named to Freshman All-America Team

Stetson's Chase Johnston has been named to the Kyle Macy Freshman All-America Team, CollegeInsider.com announced on Wednesday evening.

The Kyle Macy Freshman All-America Team is comprised of the top 30 freshmen at all levels of Division I basketball. Johnston is the only representative from the ASUN Conference.

Johnston, a 6-2 guard, enjoying a record-setting rookie season for the Hatters, breaking the program's single-season 3-point field goal record. In just 25 games, Johnston sank 78 3-pointers, breaking the old record of 76 set by Luke Doyle (in 32 games) during the 2016-17 season.

He ranks 12th nationally in 3-pointers per game at 3.12.

The 2021 ASUN Freshman of the Year and a unanimous choice to the conference's All-Freshman Team, Johnston averaged 14.1 points per game, shooting 39 percent from 3-point range. Johnston scored in double figures 20 times, eclipsing the 20-point mark four times.

An obvious offensive force, Johnston excelled defensively as well. As play enters the postseason, Johnston currently leads the ASUN with 40 steals.

Johnston is Stetson's fourth Kyle Macy Freshman All-American since the inception of the award in 2012, joining Derick Newton (2016), and current teammates Mahamadou Diawara (2020) and Rob Perry (2020).

The award and team are named for Macy, the 1975 Indiana "Mr. Basketball," who played his freshman season at Purdue University, averaging 13.8 points per game while leading the Boilermakers in free throws (85.9 percent for the season). He started in 25 of 27 games, helping them to a 16-11 season record.

After playing his freshman year at Purdue, Macy transferred to Kentucky in 1976. He started every game for the Wildcats in 1977. A three-time All-America and three-time All-SEC player, Macy was a member of Kentucky's 1978 National Championship team. In his senior year of 1979-80, he became the first Kentucky player ever to be named consensus Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.
