Diogo Marques Earns ASUN Player of the Week

Stetson University junior Diogo Marques will take a hot streak into this weekend's ASUN Tennis Championship match against Kennesaw State. The native of Steubel, Portugal, will also take some hardware into the match after being named ASUN Player of the Week.

Marques took a pair of straight set victories last week from the No. 1 singles position, downing Dominic Barton of North Florida, who came in ranked 106th in the nation, 7-6, 6-2, and then topping Kennesaw State's Sebastian Osorio 6-4, 6-4, helping the Hatters to consecutive ASUN wins.

"This honor is well deserved, I think," Hatters coach Christophe Noblet said. "Diogo is displaying great composure and confidence in his abilities to perform at the highest level. He is a great leader as well."

Those two victories put the Hatters in position to host a first round match in the ASUN Championship. Stetson will face the Owls at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center on Saturday at noon.

In addition to his pair of singles victories last week, Marques also teamed with Antoine Sanchez to earn a 6-0 doubles victory at the No. 1 spot.

It is the first time for Marques to earn an ASUN Player of the Week honor. He is the first player from Stetson to win the award since his doubles partner was selected as ASUN Player of the Week on January 31, 2018. Overall, he is the 16th Stetson player to be named ASUN Player of the Week since the award made its debut during the 2003 season.

Hatters have been named ASUN Player of the Week a total of 22 times overall, which is tied with FGCU for second among current ASUN members.
