Hatters Fall Twice in Season Opener

Macon, Ga. -- Stetson dropped a pair of matches Friday to open the 2021 season, falling 3-0 to Mercer and 3-1 to Murray State on the first day of the Mercer Bears Classic at Hawkins Arena.

Game 1: Mercer def. Stetson 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 26-24)

After the Bears took an early 1-0 lead, the teams battled back-and-forth over the final two sets which featured 19 ties and nine lead changes.  Stetson held two sets points in the third set before Mercer rallied to win in extra points.

Junior outside hitter Elena Djokovic led the Hatters with 11 kills.  Senior Alejandra Perez picked up 22 digs in her first match at libero.  Freshman setter Nyah Molina recorded a double-double of 14 assists and 15 digs in her collegiate debut.

Rayanne de Oliveira led the Baers with 12 kills.  Mercer, which was picked to finish second in the SoCon preseason poll, outhit Stetson .211 to .102.

Game 2: Murray State def. Stetson 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 25-15)

Trailing 2-0 in the match, Stetson posted a .324 attack percentage (14-3-34) in the third set to win 25-21.  

Djokovic led the Hatters for the second straight match, registering 10 kills and 17 digs for her seventh career double-double.  Yamelis Mojica added eight kills and hit .300 for the match.

Molina nailed down her second double-double of the day with a 38-assist, 10-dig performance.  Perez picked up a career-high 25 digs.  Kaylee Oscarson collected six blocks, including three solos.

Brooke Watts led the Racers with 21 kills.  Murray State held a .277 to .161 advantage in attack percentage.

All four Hatter freshmen - Molina, Leilani Vitale, Beatriz Vossen and Lauren Vargo - made their collegiate debuts Friday.  Vitale and Vossen each recorded their first career kills and Vargo picked up her first career dig and ace.

The Hatters will face New Hampshire at 12 p.m. Saturday in the team's final contest at the Mercer Bears Classic.
