Hatters welcome Liberty to town for first ASUN competition

Deland, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's soccer team gets set to begin its Atlantic Sun Conference schedule as the Hatters take on Liberty University on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the ATC. Admission is $5.00 or free with a Stetson University ID. 
 
Recap
Stetson comes off its first win of the season as the Hatters downed Embry-Riddle 6-1 back on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Freshman Nelson Pereira recorded his first career hat trick and senior Alex Turner added a goal and an assist in the win. In his first match of the year, Jano Baxmann assisted Felix Aakerberg's first career goal, which iced the match for the Hatters. 
 
All-Time Series
Stetson leads the all-time series 2-0-1 between the ASUN rivals. The Hatters took the last match with the Flames 1-0 back on Oct. 5, 2019. Gio Rodriguez scored the lone goal of the match on an assist from William Suaut
 
Scouting the Flames
Liberty comes into Saturday's ASUN match at 2-3 on the year as the Flames have won two matches in a row after dropping their first three. Liberty defeated Radford 3-0 back on Sept. 11 and then topped Gardner-Webb 2-1 on Sept. 14. Noah Holmes leads the Flames with three goals scored and six points. Michael Catanzarite, Marko Mitrevski, and Jarrod McKenchie have each scored a goal for the Flames. Danny Cordero leads Liberty keepers with 10 saves on the year. 
 
Hatters Notes
A trio of Hatters have three goals on the season as Oliver Bryneus, Ajmeer Spengler and Pereira have each found the back of their opponent's net three times. Turner netted his second of the year in the win over Embry-Riddle while Suaut, Aakerberg and Gabriel Toro have all scored once. Jacob Gruber leads Hatters keepers with 14 saves and one shutout on the season.
 
Looking Ahead
After the Hatters bout with the Flames, Stetson's men's soccer team enjoys a week off before the Hatters head to Nashville to take on the No. 22 Lipscomb University Bison in another ASUN Conference match. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. EST.
