Bennett Rossell set to represent Hatters, United States in World Rowing Championships

Oeiras, Portugal -- For the first time in Stetson Rowing history, the Hatters will be represented in the World Rowing Coastal Championships & Beach Sprint Finals in Oeiras, Portugal as sophomore Bennett Rossell is set to participate in the event. Rossell will trade in his customary hunter green and white for red, white, and blue as he will be part of the first team to compete for U.S. Rowing at the event beginning on Friday, Sept. 24 through Oct. 3.

Rossell is an economics major from Palm City, Florida and a coxswain for Stetson's men's rowing team. The Palm City native is set to compete in beach sprints on Friday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. local time (9 a.m. EST) to kick off the event. Coastal rowing is slated for 12:30 p.m. (7:30 a.m. EST) on Thursday, Sept. 30 and then again on Friday, Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. (4 a.m. EST). All races for the event take place at Lisbon Harbor and Oeiras beach in Oeiras, Portugal.

"This is an amazing opportunity for both Bennett and Stetson rowing," said assistant rowing coach Andrew Rouse of his sophomore coxswain. "Bennett has put lots of time and effort into being the first student athlete in the history of Stetson rowing to earn the right to represent the United States at a World Rowing Championship Regatta," Rouse continued. "His dedication and passion to the sport has given the university recognition at both the national and international stages, and that will only continue to grow as he builds upon his already very successful career in the years to come."

This is the first time that United States Rowing has supported a team to compete in beach sprints at a World Rowing Championship regatta making Rossell an official member of the Senior National Team.

For Coastal Championships, Rossell will represent the United States, but the U.S.A. Olympic Committee has not yet officially recognized the event. This is set to change come the 2024 Paris Olympics as coastal rowing will become an exhibition event and then will be a medaling event in 2028.

"This is a big deal for me as I am one of the youngest athletes to ever compete and represent the U.S. at the Senior/Elite stage," said Rossell. "On top of that, it is an honor to be able to represent the U.S. on the international stage for the first ever crew that the United States has sent to this event," the sophomore continued. "With hopes of being in the 2024 Olympics, this is a huge leap forwards towards this goal and I am excited to see what the future holds for me and this sport."

Rossell has his sights set on both the 2024 and 2028 Olympic cycles as well as being selected for the first ever U.S.A. National Team to compete at the event next year.
