Hatters Split at Paradise Classic on Friday

Stetson Downs Bethune-Cookman for first win

Boca Raton, Fla. -- Stetson earned its first victory of the season Friday, defeating Bethune-Cookman 3-1 in the opening match of the Owls Paradise Classic at FAU Arena.

The Hatters (1-4) fell by the same 3-1 score to FAU Friday afternoon to earn a two-game split.

Game 1: Stetson 3, B-CU 1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-13)

After hitting just .111 in the opening set, the Hatters posted attack percentages of .379, .478, and .536 to rally for a 3-1 victory.

Junior Elena Djokovic led the Hatters with 16 kills, while senior Alexis Thompson recorded a career-high 13 kills.  Thompson hit .579 while fellow middle Kennedy Muldrow hit .692 (9-0-13). Anabelle Standish also recorded nine kills.
  
Alejandra Perez led the back row with 14 digs while Nyah Molina dished out 38 assists.  

Jasmine Moore led the Wildcast with eight kills.

Overall, Stetson hit a season-high .336.  The Hatters did not trail over the final three sets and used an 8-0 run in the third set to pull away.

Game 2: Florida Atlantic 3, Stetson 1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23)

The Owls held a 73-31 advantage in kills and a 164-113 advantage in attack attempts in route to the victory.  Stetson nearly forced a fifth set, however, as the Hatters led 22-21 late in the fourth set.

Kaylee Oscarson came off the bench and set a school record with eight solo blocks.  The previous single-game record of four solo blocks was held by Hao Jin and Brianna Schmid. Her eight total blocks was also a career-high.

Djokovic led the offense with 12 kills, while Thompson hit .545 (7-1-11). Molina registered 26 assists and Perez picked up 14 digs.

Klara Zarnovicka led FAU with 22 kills.  FAU held a .238 to .150 advantage in attack percentage.

The Hatters and Owls will meet once more at noon on Saturday.
