Hatters fall to Jacksonville 57-50 in low-scoring affair

Jacksonville, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team fell 57-50 to Jacksonville University Tuesday night at Swisher Gymnasium in the Hatters third ASUN matchup of the season.

The Hatters (7-9, 1-2) got out to an early 6-0 lead after back-to-back triples from Chase Johnston. After an Alvin Tumblin free throw, Stetson held a 15-8 lead with 10:53 left in the first half. The seven-point lead was the Hatters largest of the contest. Soon after, the Dolphins (10-4, 2-0) went on a 16-4 run, capped off by a Kevion Nolan jumper and Jacksonville took a 24-19 lead with 4:07 left in the half. Stetson finished the half on its own 7-2 run highlighted by a Wheza Panzo 3-pointer and the Hatters and Dolphins were deadlocked at 26 apiece headed to the locker room.

Out of the break, Stetson and JU traded blows early and by the 14:19 mark, the Hatters had a 33-32 edge over the Dolphins. Over the next six and half minutes, Stetson could not connect on a shot and JU went on an 8-0 run to take a 40-33 advantage with 8:42 left in regulation. With 1:10 left, JU took a 54-45 lead for its largest lead of the game, but then another Johnston 3-pointer and a Christiaan Jones layup made it a two-possession game as the Hatters were now down 54-50. This would be the closest Stetson would come as the Hatters were forced to foul and the Dolphins connected on their free throws, and ultimately handing Stetson its second ASUN loss of the year.

Jones led all Hatters scorers with 16 points and brought down six boards. Johnston recorded double figures for the eighth straight contest and despite only four points, Mahamadou Diawara led all players on the night with 12 rebounds.

Tuesday night's contest was Stetson's second lowest scoring affair of the year as both teams combined for only 107 points.

The Stetson University men's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 15 with another Atlantic Sun Conference matchup as the Hatters host the Kennesaw State Owls. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
