Hatters fall 75-71 at KSU, drop fourth in a row

Kennesaw, Ga. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team dropped its fourth in a row Wednesday night as the Hatters fell 75-71 to Kennesaw State at the Kennesaw Convocation Center.

Stetson and KSU traded blows early on as the Hatters (11-17, 5-10 ASUN) and the Owls (12-16, 7-8) found themselves deadlocked at 19 apiece by the 9:42 mark after a Stephan Swenson triple. The Owls went on a short 8-5 run to take a 27-24 lead with 6:37 left in the half, but it did not last long as back-to-back 3-pointers from Chase Johnston and Wheza Panzo put the Hatters back out front, 30-27 with 5:06 left. Stetson and KSU continued to go toe-to-toe for the rest of the half, but the Hatters took a 41-37 edge into intermission.

In the second stanza, the Hatters drew first blood on a floater from Johnston, forcing a quick KSU timeout. By the 15:02 mark, Johnston gave the Hatters a 54-47 advantage, eventually growing to an eight-point lead 3:00 later. By the 10:23 mark, the Owls made it a one-possession game, but Stetson continued to hold its lead until the 1:55 mark when four straight Terrell Burden free throws gave KSU a 74-70 lead. It was their first lead since the 6:37 mark in the first half. The Owls retained that lead for the remainder of the contest and handed the Hatters their fourth loss in a row.

Johnston led all scorers on the night as the sophomore followed up his 38-point performance on Saturday night with 23 points on Wednesday night. Panzo's 19 points were one point shy of trying his career-high of 20 that he set in Stetson's 113-95 win over Eastern Kentucky.

The Hatters return home on Saturday, Feb. 26 as Stetson hosts North Florida for its regular season finale. It is also Senior Day for the Stetson men's basketball program as the Hatters will honor Christiaan Jones, Wyatt Hollmann, and student manager Rex Walters. Pregame ceremonies will begin before the 1 p.m. tip-off. All the action will be streamed on ESPN+.
