Hatters fall to UNF in OT on Senior Day

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team dropped its final regular season contest 74-69 to the University of North Florida Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center in another tightly contested overtime game.

The Hatters (11-18, 5-11 ASUN) immediately found themselves in a hole as North Florida opened the contest with an 11-0 run. At the 16:11 mark, Christiaan Jones put the Hatters on the board after Stephan Swenson came up with an offensive board. With 8:53 left in the opening stanza, an Alvin Tumblin layup knotted the game at 15-all but that was the closest the Hatters would get as the Ospreys (11-19, 7-9) kept the Stetson offense at bay for the rest of the half.

In the second stanza, the Ospreys' lead grew to 36-29 by the 15:48 mark, but almost 3:00 later, Chase Johnston knocked down a triple to get Stetson within two, 39-37. By the 7:35 mark, UNF gained a 10-point lead, their largest of the game and forced a 30 second Hatters timeout. For the remainder of regulation, Stetson chipped away at the lead and with 26 seconds left, Jones connected from downtown to get the Hatters within one possession. Then with 11 seconds on the clock, Stephan Swenson traveled the length of the floor and knotted the game at 56 apiece to send it to overtime.

Halfway through the overtime period, the Ospreys took another 10-point lead, but again the Hatters chipped away and with 23 seconds left, Johnston knocked down another triple to get Stetson within two, but after two UNF stops, the Ospreys came away with the 74-69 win.

For the sixth straight game, Johnston led all Hatters scorers as the sophomore tallied his third straight game with 20 or more points racking up 25 on the afternoon. Jones recorded his team-leading fifth double as the grad student had 18 points and 12 boards.

With the loss, the Hatters ended the regular season as the No. 6 seed in the ASUN East Division and will square off against the No. 3 seed in the West, Central Arkansas in the first round of ASUN Championship tournament on Tuesday, March 1. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ at a time to be determined.
