Hatters fall 74-73 to UCA in ASUN First Round

Conway, Ark. -- The Stetson University men's basketball team fell 74-73 to Central Arkansas in the First Round of the 2021-22 ASUN Championship tournament Tuesday night at the Farris Center.

Central Arkansas opened Tuesday's contest with a bucket from Camren Hunter to put the Bears (11-19) up 2-0. That was only one of two leads UCA would have in the first half. The Hatters (11-19) quickly knotted the game at 2-2 and by the first media timeout at the 15:44 mark, it was tied at 8 apiece. The Hatters used a 12-4 run from the 10:33 mark to the 5:10 mark, highlighted by two Wheza Panzo triples, and took a 31-20 lead. By the break, the Hatters held a 40-30 edge.

Stetson went 5-for-9 from beyond the arc in the first stanza while UCA went 1-for-13.

Coming out of intermission, Stetson jumped out to a 14-point lead with 16:36 left in regulation. The Hatters held onto a double-digit lead for much of the second hal,f but then a 15-3 run from the Bears flipped the script and UCA suddenly had a 66-65 lead with 5:21 remaining. After the Hatters got down 71-69 at the 2:14 mark, back-to-back layups from Stephan Swenson gave Stetson a 73-71 edge, but with 11 seconds left, UCA's Collin Cooper hit a 3-pointer that gave the Bears their final lead of the contest.

Five Hatters finished in double figures as both Swenson and Christiaan Jones finished with 13 points each. Panzo and Chase Johnston tallied 12 points apiece and Mahamadou Diawara finished with 10. Despite the loss, Swenson recorded his first career double-double with his 13 points and 10 dimes. It is the first points-assists double-double for the Hatters since Angel Rivera had 20 points and 12 assists against Florida A&M in 2016.

"I love my team. I love my kids. These kids have been resilient all year with how they play," said head coach Donnie Jones. "They showed great character and they gave us all they had."

The Hatters finished the 2021-22 season with an 11-19 record, just one win shy of tying last season's mark.
