Second half surge propels Hatters in comeback win over JSU

DeLand, Fla. --  The Stetson University men's basketball team overcame a 12-point halftime deficit and upset ASUN leader Jacksonville State 63-57 at the Edmunds Center Wednesday night.

All year long, the Hatters (11-13, 5-6 ASUN) have been a second half team as Stetson has outscored its opponents by 47 points (904-857) in the second stanza and Wednesday night was no different.

The Hatters fell behind from the tip as the Gamecocks (16-8, 9-2) opened the contest with a 6-0 run. By the 12:37 mark, the Hatters knotted the game at 10 apiece on a Wheza Panzo trey, but over the next 8:30, JSU outscored the Hatters 27-10 and took a 37-20 lead by the 4:01 mark. Stetson cut the deficit to 12 before the break, but the Gamecocks held the Hatters to under 30 points in the first half and took a 41-29 lead into intermission.

Out of the break, the Hatters offense surged to life as Stetson battled back with a 7-1 run to open the second half, capped off by a 3-pointer from Stephan Swenson. For four minutes, from the 6:54 mark to the 2:54 mark, Stetson and JSU traded blows until Chase Johnston hit a go-ahead shot from downtown, that put the Hatters in front for the rest of the game and helped seal the 63-57 upset victory.

Jones and Johnston led all Stetson scorers with 18 points as Jones recorded his fourth double-double of the year with 12 boards. Panzo went 4-for-9 from deep and tallied 12 points while Mahamadou Diawara tallied 12 rebounds.

In the win, Jones eclipsed the 600 career rebound threshold while Diawara went over 500 for his. With his three 3-point field goals on the night, Johnston is now two 3-pointers away from setting a new single season record with 80.

JSU's Darian Adams led all scorers on the night as the guard tallied 19 points for the Gamecocks.

Stetson's men's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 12 as the Hatters head to Fort Myers to take on FGCU for their first East Division rematch. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
