Hatters blank UNA, falter against FGCU

DeLand, Fla. -- The No. 17-ranked Stetson University beach volleyball team hosted the first day of the Stetson Challenge Friday as the Hatters went 1-1 in their two duals, topping North Alabama 5-0 in straight sets before falling 4-1 against Florida Gulf Coast at Cooper Beach.

Lauren Della and Colene Hamilton led off Stetson's third home tournament with a 2-0 win over UNA's Lauren Quigley and Katie Gerig to get the Hatters (6-8) on the board. Audrey Gauthier and Klea Sirois followed Della and Hamilton with another two-set win as the pair took their sets 21-17 and 21-16 to put the Hatters on top 2-0. On court 1, reigning ASUN Pair of the Week winners Shae Henson and Kylie Neuschaeferova sealed the win in dominating fashion as the pair topped their opponents 21-9 in both sets.

In their second dual of the afternoon, the Hatters faced adversity early on as the Eagles (12-5) took a 2-0 lead after taking matches on both courts 4 and 5. Then on court 2, Carolina Ferraris and Anete Namike downed Jacqueline Carpenter and Lexie Hamilton to get the Hatters on the board and cut the deficit to 2-1. FGCU then locked up the dual with a two-set victory on court 3.

The Stetson beach squad will be back in action on Saturday, March 19 as the Hatters square off against North Florida and Palm Beach Atlantic. First serve against the Ospreys is set for 10 a.m.
