JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Stetson redshirt sophomore right-hander Nick Durgin has allowed exactly one run in his 22 career innings of work against Jacksonville. That one run on Friday cost him and the Hatters the second game of their Easter weekend series against the Dolphins at Sessions Stadium.
Durgin (1-2) allowed a pair of first inning hits and a walk, with the second hit an infield single by Blake DeLamielleure, to score that single run. The Dolphins added an insurance run in the ninth inning, but the run in the first was all they needed in a 2-0 ASUN victory to even the series.
Jacksonville (17-15, 5-9) used four pitchers to combine for the shutout of the Hatters (18-16, 5-9).
Durgin worked seven innings, giving up just that one run on four hits. He allowed two walks and struck out just one. He got the Dolphins to hit 13 balls on the ground for outs and got six fly ball outs.
Senior Cameron Hill led the way offensively for the Hatters, going 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk. Senior Nick DiPonzio also had two hits on the day.
The Hatters had a chance to get on the board first against JU starter Michael Darrell-Hick (1-4). Hill and DiPonzio opened the game with consecutive hits, but Hill was thrown out trying to steal third before Yohann Dessureault singled down the right-field line, a ball that would have certainly scored Hill from second.
Stetson wound up stranding two runners in the inning, the first of 11 men left on base in the game. The Hatters also had scoring chances in the second, fourth and seventh innings, but were hitless in eight at bats with runners in scoring position and were also 1-for-10 with two out, with Hill's ninth-inning triple accounting for the only hit.
Overall, the four JU hurlers combined to record 14 strikeouts, including eight by the starter in five innings and three by freshman Blake Barquin over the final 2.1 innings to earn him his first collegiate save.
The Hatters and Dolphins are scheduled to meet again on Saturday in the series finale. That game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
