JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Stetson Hatters managed just four hits on Saturday afternoon and hit into three double-plays against North Florida pitching in a 4-1 loss to the Ospreys.
Graduate Chris Gonzalez (1-4) started and took the loss on the mound for Stetson (21-25, 6-17). The left-hander struggled early, allowing a pair of first inning runs,but settled in to turn in a solid performance. He went six total innings, allowing all four runs but just the first two that were earned earned, while scattering six hits, allowing two walks and striking out two. Freshman Dominic Stagliano worked two shutout innings to close out the game for Stetson.
UNF's Jason Gonzalez (5-2) kept the Hatters off-balance at the plate. He allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings of work. He walked three and struck out five. Senior Zach Chappell worked the final two innings to earn his first save of the year as the Ospreys improved to 20-27 overall and 10-13 in ASUN play.
The first six Ospreys reached base to start the game, with Trey Spratling-Williams delivering a two-run single for the early UNF lead. He came up clutch again in the sixth inning, driving home another run with a double after a Stetson error opened the door. A sacrifice fly plated a second run that inning.
The Hatters scored their only run in the seventh inning when Nick DiPonzio was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a ground ball and then scored on the second hit of the game by sophomore Jakob Bullard. The Hatters appeared set for a big inning when Kyle Ball followed Bullard with a hit to right, but the Ospreys cut Bullard down at third.
Stetson will try to salvage the final game of the weekend series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
