JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Stetson Hatters bounced off the mat Sunday afternoon at Harmon Stadium to score three runs in the 10th inning to take a 7-5 victory over North Florida in the series finale.
Junior Danny Garcia (3-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Stetson (22-25, 7-17). The right-hander went 4.2 shutout innings while allowing just three hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Jonathan Gonzalez came on the close out the game in the 10th inning to earn his first save of the year.
Stetson built a 4-0 lead over the Ospreys (20-28, 10-14) behind starter Austin Amaral, but UNF erased the Stetson lead in the fifth inning after Amaral walked a pair of UNF hitters with one out and then let a ground ball get away from him on the mound to load the bases. A pair of UNF singles and a ground out plated the four runs to tie the game.
The Hatters scored twice against UNF starter Dominick Madonna in the second inning, plating a run on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Estrella and another on a ground-rule double by Cam Hill. Stetson added to its lead in the top of the fifth after Madonna walked the first two hitters. Max McKinley (3-5) came on in relief and, after Camden Traficante put down a sacrifice bunt, Nick DiPonzio delivered a sacrifice fly for a run before Jakob Bullard singled home another for a 4-0 lead.
It was a walk to Traficante that got things going for Stetson in the 10th. DiPonzio delivered a sacrifice bunt before Bullard delivered a hit to put runners on the corners and chase McKinley. Zach Chappell came on in relief and hit Brandon Hylton with the only pitch he threw before Stephen Halstead came in to walk Kyle Ball to force in the go-ahead run. A ground ball plated Bullard with the second run and then a passed ball scored Connor Kehl, who pinch-ran for Hylton, to make it 7-4.
UNF took advantage of a Stetson error in the bottom of the inning to get one run back, but Gonzalez got three ground ball outs to give the Hatters their first extra-inning win of the year.
DiPonzio and Bullard led Stetson with two hits each in the game.
The Hatters will be back home at Melching Field on Tuesday night to host South Florida. That game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
