Hatters earn 3-set sweep against Cornell in final non-conference match

TAMPA, FL --The Stetson volleyball team notched to a victory over the Cornell Big Red, 3-0, in its final match of the Bulls Volleyball Invitational Saturday at The USF Corral.

The out-of-conference win improved Stetson's overall record to 9-3 on the season, while Cornell drops to 2-7.

Sophomore and senior outside hitters Leilani Vitale and Elena Djokovic paced the squad with 10 kills a piece. Sophomore setters Nyah Molina and Elif Yasar combined for 31 assists with Yasar edging out Molina with 16 to the former's 15. Five different Hatters recorded at least six digs with Molina leading the pack at eight.

The Hatters and Big Red were relatively even in the first set until Stetson reeled off a 12-3 scoring run in the middle of the the set, leading 14-8. While the squad from Ithica, New York closed the gap to four, 14-10, the Hats never looked back winning 25-15.

It appeared to be more of the same in the second set with Stetson grabbing six of the first seven points, but the Big Red battled back tying the set at 13 and 16; however, Cornell was unable to push in front and dropped the set to the Hatters, 25-22.

Cornell grabbed the early advantage staying just ahead of the Hatters until the set was tied at five. Stetson notched six-straight points to go up 11-5. SU never looked back, and claimed the third set 25-20.

Stetson Volleyball begins ASUN Conference play on the road with a pair of matches at Jacksonville, Florida. The Hatters will face Jacksonville Friday at 7 p.m., with North Florida on Saturday at 8 p.m.
