Boca Raton, Fla. – The Stetson volleyball team continued its hot start to the 2022 season by sweeping a pair of matches on Friday on the opening day of the FAU Owls Paradise Classic.
Stetson began the day with a 3-0 sweep of Alcorn State, the Hatters' second consecutive victory over the Braves. Stetson won the match with scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-14. The victory gave the Stetson program its first 4-0 start to a season since at least 1980.
Not satisfied, the Hatters came back in the afternoon with a sweep of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Stetson battled to take a 25-23 victory in the first game of the match before taking consecutive 25-15 wins to complete a sweep of the Lions.
Stetson will go for its second consecutive tournament sweep on Saturday at noon when the Hatters square off against host Florida Atlantic. Like Stetson, the Owls swept matches from both UAPB and Alcorn State to improve to 4-1 on the season. Florida Atlantic's only setback so far came at home last Saturday when the Owls were downed by Lehigh 3-0.
Freshman
Sophia Groom led the Hatters to their opening win over Alcorn state by posting a team-high 11 kills. Sophomore
Nyah Molina had 19 assists in the match while fellow sophomore
Elif Yasar had 11. Sophomore
Beatriz Vossen was credited with a team-high 11 digs in that victory.
As a team, the Hatters had 44 kills in the match against just 12 errors compared to 20 kills for Alcorn State against 16 errors.
Senior
Elena Djokovic took center stage in the victory over UAPB, posting a team-high 13 kills with a .542 attack percentage. Junior
Anabelle Standish chipped in with nine kills in the match. Molina had her season-high so far with 33 assists.
