Hatters Bounce Back Against Austin Peay

The Hatters ended their homestand on a victorious note as they defeated Austin Peay 3-1 Saturday night.
 
Stetson would start off the first set giving up three straight points before answering with four of their own to take the lead 4-3. The Governors would answer with another three-point scoring run of their own. The two teams would trade a couple of points before Stetson would retake the lead with three straight points going up 8-7. The lead would swing back to Austin Peay before the Hatters, backed by two kills from Sophia Groom and an another by Amaris Carter, would take their largest lead of the set. 11-9. Stetson would then benefit from a seven-point scoring streak that contained six different errors from the Governors as well as an ace from Haruka Sugimoto to make the lead 18-10. The Hatters would end the match on a five-point scoring streak which included a kill by Anabelle Standish and an ace by Leilani Vitale winning the first set 25-16.
 
The Hatters would start off the second set up 2-0 before quickly finding themselves down 2-5. Stetson would find themselves eventually down by eight with the scoring being 8-16.  The score would soon be tied at 16 with eight straight points form the Hatters that included three kills by Carter, as well as one from Vitale, Selin Kalkan and Nyah Molina. The two teams would trade points until the score was once again tied at 23. An ace from Sugimoto and a kill from Molina would close out the comeback for the Hatters as they would take the second set 25-23.
 
In the third set the Hatters would once again find themselves trailing the Governors. Austin Peay would work out to an eleven-point lead going up 21-10. After a timeout the Hatters would go on a six-point scoring streak to cut the lead to five. Stetson would continue clawing back but would lose the set 21-25.
 
The Hatters would carry their momentum from the end of the third set into the fourth. Head Coach Yang Deng would make some adjustments in this set including starting Lauren Vargo to serve. Stetson would take a 3-0 lead with a kill from Standish and Molina while also getting an ace from Vargo. The Hatters would increase their lead to 11-3 after a four-point scoring streak that included two kills from Lily Mueller. Stetson would increase their lead to eleven on a four-point scoring run that included two kills from Sophia Groom. The Hatters would close out the four set strong winning it 25-13.
 
Standish and Molina would each total a double-double tonight. Standish totaled 12 kills and 15 digs. Molina also totaled 15 digs while also adding 27 assists which led the team. Carter led the team with 15 kills while also picking up 5 blocks.
 
The Hatters are now 5-3 in conference as they will go on the road this upcoming weekend for a trip to Kentucky. They will take on Eastern Kentucky on Friday, October 20 at 6pm and Bellarmine on Saturday, October 21 at 4pm.
