Hatters Down Knights in Straight Sets

Louisville, KY – Stetson (11-11, 6-4) took on Bellarmine (8-14, 6-4) on Saturday afternoon defeating the Knights in straight sets 3-0.

"We worked hard on trying to finish the game by being consistent on our performances throughout the game," said Head Coach Yang Deng. "We played clean and stayed on top of our game. I'm happy that we improved from last night."

In the first set, the Hatters fell behind 0-2 early but quickly answered back. After the score was tied at five, Stetson never looked back as they would win the first set 25-14. The Hatters biggest lead was 11, when they lead 22-11 and the final of 25-14. Anabelle Standish would lead the team with 7 kills out of Stetson's 14 kill total in the set. Stetson had a team total 5 blocks to help build their lead in the set.

The Hatters kept the train rolling in the second set winning it 25-23. Stetson had to battle back for much of the set as Bellarmine took a 4-1 lead early and the Hatters played from behind until they were able to tie up the score at 19-19. Stetson then took their first lead since 1-0 at 20-19, before going on to complete the comeback with a 25-23 win. Standish added 5 more kills to stat sheet giving her 12 in the first two sets with Sophia Groom adding 3 kills as well.

Stetson finished off the 3-0 victory in the third set winning 25-20. The Hatters took a 2-0 lead and then there was some back and forth play. Stetson would work as a unit to create their largest lead of the set at 6. Bellarmine tied it up at 15-15, but that would be as close as they would get as Stetson claimed victory. Standish had another 7 kills, while Groom added another 4 to her total.

Overall, Standish would lead the team with 19 kills, followed by Groom with 8. Nyah Molina recorded 30 assists. Haruka Sugimoto lead the team with 16 digs and Amaris Carter was not far behind with 11.

Up next for the Hatters is a Tuesday matchup with rival FGCU at the Edmunds Center at 6:00PM.
