DeLand, Fla. – The Hatter's season came down to its final game against FGCU with a spot in the ASUN Playoffs up for grabs. With North Florida losing and Kennesaw State winning earlier in the day Stetson had no choice but to go for the win against a team that was second in conference. The Hatters would fall short in that game and finish with a 3-12-3 record overall and a 3-6-2 conference record.
"In my 20+ years of coaching I have never gone through a season with more adversity. In those 20 years, I have not been more proud of a team for embracing these challenges and attacking them," said Head Coach
Chris Bergmann.
Stetson struggled at the beginning of the season against strong competition including Miami and Florida. However, freshman
Mallory Osborn and transfer
Annika Seem would soon become names that everyone would know. Osborn would earn the starting position in goal and lead the entire conference in saves. Seem would score three goals over two games against Air Force and Charleston Southern. In total, she would finish the season with five goals and three of them coming from the penalty spot. Seem would be the first Hatter to convert a penalty kick since 2019.
The Hatters earned their first win of the season in their first conference game against Jacksonville. Going into the season finale against Florida Gulf Coast, Stetson would be coming off a three-game streak of earning result. They had wins over Eastern Kentucky and Bellarmine while also drawing against Austin Peay.
"The message throughout the season was that life is going to bring you challenges but the goal is not to allow these challenges to dictate outcomes. Instead, you have to attack and embrace them to move forward. This team did just that. We did not get the wins on the field that we hoped for however, we did get wins in so many other ways," said Bergmann.
Stetson battled every game as they saw many of their players miss time due to injuries with only two of their usual starters make all 18 starts. This meant many played different positions throughout the game and positions they may not have had much game experience in.
"Our focus was on playing together and every day was about creating team synergy. We know we can accomplish more together than apart. The future is very bright with Stetson Women's Soccer and I cannot wait to see all they are going to do," stated Bergmann.
Some individual honors for the Hatters include
Annika Seem winning Player of the Week early in the season and
Kelly Gende earning a spot on the All-ASUN Academic Team.
