Hatters Earn Victory Over Royals

The Hatters got back in the win column Friday night with a 3-1 victory over Queens.

The first set would remain close between the two teams as the score would be tied at 9 before the Hatters would begin to pull away. With Sophia Groom serving, Stetson would rattle off an 8-0 scoring run to take a 17-9 lead. The Hatters would extend their lead to 11 as they took a 22-11 lead before finishing the first set winning 25-14. Six of the seven Hatters earned a kill in the first set as Leilani Vitale would lead the way with four.

The Hatters would continue with their strong play in the second set. With Stetson leading 8-7 the team would go on a 5-0 scoring run extending their lead to six with the help of errors from the Royals. The Hatters would win the second set 25-19.

The third set was very back and forth with neither team obtaining more than a three-point lead. The Hatters would fall in the third set 23-25 as the Royals were backed by six service aces in that set alone.

"We didn't let the third set affect us," said Captain Nyah Molina. "We kept pushing every single point and not focusing on the last one. The team had to keep a good mentality by resetting the mind going into the fourth set."

In the fourth set, the Hatters would find themselves ahead 9-6 when they once against went on a 5-0 scoring run to take an eight-point lead. Stetson would push the lead to nine as they would win the set 25-16 securing a 3-1 victory.

Anabelle Standish, Amaris Carter, Groom and Vitale would all finish the match with double digit kills. Standish and Vitale would each earn a double-double. Molina would lead the team in assists with 40 and digs with 17. Standish and Groom would lead the Hatters with 11 kills, one more than both Carter and Vitale. Lily Mueller would lead Stetson in blocks with five.

"They knew I was going to set the outsides," stated Molina about spreading the ball around. "I had to think of different ways to run the court, so I had to focus on setting Leilani and give the outsides a break."

Stetson will return to the court tomorrow night at the Edmunds Center as they host Kennesaw State. The match will begin at 6pm with Senior Day taking place beforehand.
