Hatters Advance to Semifinals after 2-0 Win over #6 Jacksonville

Box Score LOUISVILLE, KY - The Stetson men's soccer team, after concluding the regular season with a 6-6-4 record, claimed the #3 seed in the ASUN Championship. On Saturday, November 4th, they clashed with the Jacksonville Dolphins at the neutral ground of the Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville, KY. The game carried significance for the Hatters, seeking redemption after their 2020 ASUN Championship playoff loss to Jacksonville and inconclusive 1-1 draw earlier this season.

The match started with both teams exchanging early scoring opportunities, with goalkeepers from both sides making crucial saves. By halftime, the Hatters maintained a 9-7 lead in shot attempts, yet the score remained deadlocked at 0.

The second half commenced with a powerful shot from Luis Lara, the Hatters' top goal scorer, hitting the woodwork. Stetson intensified their offensive efforts, firing off multiple shots, two of which were on target but saved by the Jacksonville goalkeeper.

It wasn't until the 76th minute that Stetson broke the deadlock. Alvaro Gabancho, an All-ASUN First Team member, connected with a Charles Ahl corner kick, heading the ball into the net and putting the Hatters ahead. The team further cemented their victory in the 84th minute when Afonso Conde, an All-Freshman team honoree, netted a stunning goal to the top right of the net from an Alessandro Gabbani assist, securing a 2-0 win over the Dolphins.

Throughout the game, Lara led the team with five shot attempts, while Gabbani and Toro contributed 4 and 3, respectively, with all three of Toro's shots being on goal. In goal, Nicolo Radaelli faced 13 shots, making one save and earning the team's fifth shutout of the season.

Looking ahead, the Hatters are now geared up for the Quarterfinal round, facing off against Bellarmine in a rematch. The upcoming match, scheduled for Monday, November 6th at 7:00 PM at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville, KY, is pivotal as Stetson seeks redemption for both this season's recent loss in the final game and last year's playoff elimination, as they aim to turn the tables.
