Box Score DELAND, Fla. - The Stetson University Women's Basketball team took the court for the final time in 2023 as they fended off the Flagler Saints 73-60 to close out non-conference play at the Edmunds Center on Saturday, Dec. 30.
Jamiya Turner led the charge, achieving her first double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Her scoring prowess, marked by 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, matched her season-high, previously established against Dayton on Nov. 24. Additionally, her 12 rebounds set a new season-high.
After surpassing 500 career rebounds in the win against Valparaiso, the redshirt-senior joined the 1,000 point club during today's win.
"I am so proud of Jamiya and her accomplishment," said Head Coach
Lynn Bria. "It is well deserved. She has been amazing in this program."
Turner wasn't the sole standout for the Hatters against Flagler. Sophomore forward
Jaelyn Talley also made a significant impact, securing her first double-double of the season and second of her career with a 15-point, 11-rebound performance.
The Hatters took the initiative early, with Talley grabbing an offensive rebound and converting it into a layup. In a closely contested first quarter, the two teams traded leads six times before Stetson reclaimed the advantage with a layup from
Quentarra Mitchell, ending the quarter with a 17-15 lead.
Turner, entering the game needing 16 points to reach the milestone, notched six points in the opening quarter. Meanwhile,
Khamya McNeal sank the only three-pointer of the quarter, aiding in holding Flagler at bay after the Saints initially took a four-point lead.
Following a trade of free throws to commence the second quarter,
Skylar Treadwell connected on a three-pointer with an assist from
Promise Keshi, hitting the shot just as the shot clock expired. Moments later, Treadwell returned the favor on a Keshi three-pointer from the corner.
Flagler launched a 10-3 run over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to just one point before Turner ended the run with a successfully converted and-1. Turner then answered by kickstarting a 7-0 stretch for Stetson before Mitchell scored the final two baskets for Stetson to end the half, sending Stetson to the break with a 39-25 advantage.
Stetson commenced the second half with a 7-0 start that included a three-pointer from
Jordan Peete and a pair of baskets from freshman
Diawna Carter-Hartley.
A 16-5 surge from the Saints leveled the game at 51 apiece with a minute remaining in the third quarter. However, a crucial pair of free throws from Mitchell provided the Hatters a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Despite two made shots from Turner to begin the fourth, the Hatters wouldn't break ahead until Peete's layup with 7:42 left. The senior guard's layup launched a 16-3 stretch for the Hatters to secure their fifth win of the season.
As a team, the Hatters shot 40.6 percent from the floor, going 28-of-69. They outrebounded the Saints, 44-36, while dominating the paint 46-20. The Hatters secured 13 offensive rebounds, translating to 16 second-chance points.
Stetson, now 5-9 on the season, will head to Jacksonville for the start of conference play on Thursday, Jan. 4. The Hatters will play the University of North Florida at the UNF Arena with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 PM.
