Hatters Sweep Stephen F. Austin, UNC Wilmington

Stetson wins 19 of 20 sets on the day

Columbia, S.C. -- Stetson swept Stephen F. Austin and UNC Wilmington by identical 5-0 scores Saturday afternoon on Day 2 of the Carolina Challenge at Wheeler Beach.

After dropping a pair of hard-fought 3-2 decisions Friday, the 12th-ranked Hatters (7-5) delivered a strong bounce back performance Saturday to complete the weekend with a 2-2 mark.

Stetson's 4 and 5 pairs staked the Hatters to 2-0 leads in each dual.  Against the Stephen F. Austin (2-10), Lauren Della and Gabriella Bramante won 21-10, 21-15 at Pair 4, and Klea Sirois and Tori Clement won 21-16, 21-16 at Pair 5.

In the second wave, top seed Shae Henson and Karin Zolnercikova won 21-15, 27-25, earning a deep extra points victory for the second straight day.  Carolina Ferraris and Anete Namike won 21-8, 23-21 at Pair 2, and Audrey Gauthier and Noelle Weintraub won 21-10, 21-11 at Pair 3.

Against UNC Wilmington (1-3), Aleksandra Stadnik and Sirois teamed up for a 21-17, 21-15 win at Pair 4.  Della and Bramante eased their way to a 21-18, 21-8 victory at Pair 5.

At Pair 1, Henson and Zolnercikova battled their way to 21-13, 15-21, 15-13 3-set victory to improve to 9-3 on the season.  Namike and Ferraris won by retirement on Court 2 to complete a 4-0 weekend for the pair.  Weintraub and Gauthier won 21-8, 21-19 at Pair 3 to complete the 5-0 sweep.

Overall, Stetson won 19 of the 20 sets played on the day.

After 3 weekends on the East Coast, the Hatters will head to Long Beach, Calif. next weekend for a tournament featuring Texas, Utah, and Long Beach State.
