Hatters Take Both Games To Start Off the Eagle Invitational

STATESBORO, GA- The Hatters started off the weekend tournament with an impressive sweep of College of Charleston and George Washington.

The Hatters and Cougars went back and forth in the beginning of the first set until the Hatters were able to pull away 12-5 resulting in a Cougar timeout. Stetson was able to keep the lead as Anabelle Standish closed the door to win the set 25-21.

In set two the teams traded points early until the Hatters were able to take the lead 15-9 during a 7-1 scoring run. Stetson continued pulling away as Amaris Carter earned the kill that completed the set with a score of 25-16.

The third set was a true battle as neither team was able to pull away by more than three points. The Hatters went up 11-10 for their first lead of the set as they were able to persevere and win the set 25-22 on their way to sweeping the Cougars.

Standish and Sophia Groom led the Hatters with 12 kills apiece as Groom had a kill percentage of 0.800. Nyah Molina and Haruka Sugimoto each tallied 15 digs for Hatters as Molina also had 31 assists. As a team the Hatters totaled 8 blocks as their defense helped provide a boost to their offense.

In the first set of the game against George Washington the Hatters were able to score three straight points to go up 15-11 and create a little bit of breathing room. The Hatters were up 23-21 when Elif Yasar scored an important ace that brought the Hatters to set point. Stetson would end up winning the first set 25-21.

The second set was back and forth with teams essentially trading two points at a time before the Hatters ended up scoring three points in a row to tie the set at 14. The Hatters would then go on another three-point scoring run to take the lead 23-22 before winning the set 25-23.

Set three was a battle for the Hatters from the beginning and they eventually found themselves down 10-16 when Head Coach Yang Deng called a timeout. Stetson came out of that timeout scoring three straight points forcing a George Washington timeout. The Hatters would go on three more scoring runs of three straight points to win the set 25-21.

Standish once again led the Hatters with 18 kills and Amaris Carter followed her up with nine kills of her own. Nyah Molina and Elif Yasar each contributed double digit assists. Standish, Molina and Sugimoto all contributed double digit digs to once again put focus on the Hatters defense.
