Clarksville, TN – Stetson Volleyball swept Austin Peay Friday night for their first conference win on the season.
"Anabelle carried the team as a leader tonight both physically and mentally," said Head Coach
Yang Deng. "Defensively, Sugi played well. There wasn't a ball near her that was dropping especially when we were trailing in the third set. Della did a great job of coming in when her team needed her. The team is showing a lot of maturity.
Anabelle Standish started the match off with an ace and it was evident that she was locked in. Stetson then pull ahead 9-4 using a four-point scoring run with kills from Standish and
Kayla Balfour as well as an ace from
Jenna Simmons which was the third of the set for the team. The Hatters continued building their lead with a 7-0 scoring run making it 16-6. They would run away with the first set 25-17 with Standish putting it away.
The Hatters fell behind to start the second set but rattled off seven straight points to take an 8-6 lead benefiting from several Governor errors. Austin Peay tied the set a couple of times, but Stetson pull away 14-10 on a four-point scoring run. Stetson continued tying different runs together to secure the second set victory 25-21, once again ending with a kill by Standish.
The third set started with the Governors taking the lead, but Stetson battled back. Ausin Peay was up late in the set 19-16. Stetson answered with a 7-0 scoring run that included a point where an incredible dig by
Haruka Sugimoto was finished with a Standish kill.
Lauren Della picked up the final kill for the Hatters winning the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Standish finished the match with a team high 18 kills, hitting at a 31.9% clip. She tallied two service aces which led the team, two total blocks and five digs.
Elif Yasar tallied 28 assists to go with six digs and two kills. Defensively, Sugimoto led the way with 18 digs followed by Simmons with 12.
Stetson will look to carry this momentum into the match on Saturday, October 26 against Lipscomb. That match will begin at 3:00pm.
