DeLand, Fla. – With the Stetson Men's Basketball 88-87 victory over Jacksonville, they will now host Austin Peay for the ASUN Championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Stephan Swenson has been the main story line for the Hatters throughout the tournament so far. In the quarterfinals game he tallied a double-double putting up 19 points while grabbing a career high 12 rebounds. In the semifinals, Swenson took over in the fourth quarter not missing a shot in the final minutes. He hit a three with 21 seconds left to bring the Hatters to within one and then hit the game winning three with 4.3 seconds remaining. Swenson scored 29 in the semifinal while also picking up six assists.
Scouting the Hatters (21-12, ASUN 11-5)
Stetson has had a season of milestones as three different players have hit major accomplishments. Senior Swenson joined the 1000 career points club, the 500 assists club and became the All-Time program leader in assists.
Jalen Blackmon also joined the 1000 career points club in just his second season with the Hatters.
Josh Smith was the third Hatter to hit a milestone this season as he joined the 500-rebound club after coming back from injury.
Blackmon led the ASUN in scoring as he amassed 687 points which averaged out to 20.8 points per game. He also led the conference in free throw shooting hitting over 92% from the free throw line. Blackmon finished fourth in the ASUN in three-point field goal percentage at 38.4% and third in three points per game. In the NCAA rankings, Blackmon is third in field goal attempts, ninth in field goals made, seventh in free throw percentage, fifth in total points, twentieth in points per game, fourth in three-point attempts, sixteenth in three points made per game, and seventh in total three-point field goals made.
Swenson was the floor general for the Hatters as he totaled 455 points which averages out to 13.8 per game. He also tallied 158 rebounds, 196 assists and 53 steals. Swenson led the conference in total assists while finishing second in assists per game with 5.9. He also was fourth in the conference in steals and steals per game in the ASUN. In the NCAA, he ranks tied for twelfth in assists, and twentieth in assists per game.
Aubin Gateretse was a force for the Hatters in the paint this season as he averaged 11.8 points per game, 7.6 rebounds per game, while adding 50 blocks. He finished with eight double-doubles on the season. Gateretse finished second in the conference in total rebounds, third in rebounds per game and second in blocks per game.
As a team the Hatters average 77 points per game while allowing 72.2 per game. They shot 46.6% from the field, 36.7% from three and 76.7% from the free throw line. Stetson averages 35 rebounds per game, 13.6 assists, 5.4 steals and 3.1 blocks per game.
Scouting the Governors (19-14, ASUN 10-6)
The Governors are led by Demarcus Sharp, who averages 17.2 points per game and 6.8 rebounds. He also assists with 118, and steals with 53. Dezi Jones is another big time player for Austin Peay. He averages 14.4 points per game while pulling in 3.5 rebounds per game. Jones has also tallied 101 steals and 44 steals. AS a team the Governors are shooting 45% from the field, 37% from three and 69.5% from the free throw line.
The Hatters will look to win their first ASUN Championship en route to earning their first NCAA Tournament Bid.
