Dominic Clemons Qualifies for The Open Championship

Burnham-on-Sea, England – Dominic Clemons, a standout of the 2023-24 Stetson University men's golf team, has qualified as an amateur for The 152nd Open Championship, which will be played at Royal Troon from July 18–21.

Competing at the Final Qualifiying for The 152nd Open held at the Burnham & Berrow course, Clemons tied for first place among a field of 68 golfers. He finished the qualifier tied with professional major champion Justin Rose (2013 U.S. Open Champion) Over two rounds on the par 71 course spanning 6,980 yards, Clemons shot eight under par, ending with a total score of 134. His opening round of 66, five under par, featured six birdies and 11 pars as he 34 on the front and 32 on the back. In the second round, Clemons continued his stellar play with a score of 68, including seven birdies.

Clemons's accomplishment marks a milestone for Stetson University, as he becomes the first player from the school to compete in a major championship while still enrolled as a student.

While with the Hatters, Clemons was a unanimous first-team All-ASUN selection, closing the year with five top-three finishes and seven top-five results in 12 tournaments. Clemons was a three-time ASUN Golfer of the Week. He led the team in all categories and finished ranked No. 87 in the nation in the final Spikemark golf rankings. 

Additionally, former teammate and fellow Englishman Matt Gauntlett also competed in a Final Qualifying at Royal Cinque Ports, where he tied for 12th as an amateur. Gauntlett finished even with a first round of 67 and a second round of 77, resulting in a final score of 144.
