Stetson Comes From Behind In Win Over Bethune-Cookman

Stetson Volleyball came from behind to defeat Bethune-Cookman 3-2 on Saturday in their final match of the Bash at the Beach.

In the first set the Hatters and Wildcats battled back and forth with neither able to generate any separation. Stetson was able to turn it on using two different 4 point runs to take a sizable lead. Jenna Simmons iced the first set with an ace to win 25-17.

The second and third set didn't go the Hatters' way as they dropped both 23-25 after having the lead late in both.

Stetson started the fourth set trailing early but a kill and then ace by Leilani Vitale tied the set at three. The two teams battled back and forth but Bethune-Cookman took a two-point lead. Anabelle Standish capped off a four-point run to take a 14-12 lead. The Wildcats tied the set back up at 16 and the teams continued trading points. The Hatters were on the brink of defeat trailing 23-24, but Standish rattled off three kills in a row to get the Hatters a 26-24 set win and force a fifth set.

The Hatters once again found themselves trailing 4-7 in the fifth set but never stopped fighting. They were able to continue chipping away at the deficit until tying the set at 12. On the next point, Ayala Halfon was able to get a block and give Stetson a one-point lead. Simmons then tallied back-to-back kills to win the set 15-12, and the match 3-2.

Standish finished the match with 27 kills and the next closest was Simmons with 13. Nyah Molina racked up a career high 56 assists. Halfon led the team in blocks with five total blocks and Haruka Sugimoto tallied a team high 29 digs.

After the three matches this weekend, Standish and Molina each made the All-Tournament Team. Molina finished the weekend with 20 kills, 99 assists, 38 digs and four total blocks. Standish tallied with 49 kills, 17 digs and seven total blocks in the tournament.
