Fort Myers, Fla. – Stetson beach volleyball kicked off the Florida Gulf Coast Inaugural Tournament with a perfect 2-0 record, upsetting #14 Florida International 4-1 and defeating conference rival #19 North Florida 3-2.
Against Florida International, Vanessa Hurnikova and Hanna Gubik secured the first point for Stetson on court 5 with a 21-16, 21-14 victory. Julia Czurylo and Madeline Camp followed with a 21-17, 21-18 win on court 4. Grace Goudy and Youna Coens clinched the match for the Hatters on court 2, winning 16-21, 21-18, 15-7. Julia Radelczuk and Marta Carro rounded out the final point for Stetson, 21-15, 21-17.
Katie Camp and Maria Ozaeta fell in a tough three-set battle on court 1, 21-18, 17-21, 10-15.
In the match against North Florida, Hurnikova and Gubik again put Stetson on the board first with a 21-14, 21-16 win on court 5. Radelczuk and Carro followed with a 21-17, 21-17 victory on court 3. Ozaeta and Katie Camp clinched the match for Stetson on court 1 with a 21-15, 21-13 win.
Czurylo and Madeline Camp dropped their point on court 4, 21-15, 21-13, and Goudy and Coens lost in three sets on court 2, 18-21, 21-18, 12-15.
The Hatters will finish the tournament on Saturday, March 8, with matches against South Carolina at noon and FGCU at 4:00 p.m.
