DELAND, Fla. — Stetson University baseball split a Saturday doubleheader with Fordham University at Melching Field at Conrad Park, opening with a commanding 13-7 win before falling 7-6 in a tightly contested nightcap. The day featured big hits, aggressive baserunning, and strong pitching performances on both sides of the diamond.
GAME 1 | Hatters 13, Rams 7
Stetson's lineup came out swinging in the opener, putting pressure on Fordham pitching early. Juan De la Cruz started the scoring in the first inning with a leadoff single and later came around on an RBI single by Foster Apple, giving the Hatters an early 1-0 advantage. Jayden Hylton added a key run in the second after reaching on a single and scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Jack Harley, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Hatters' offense continued to roll through the third and fourth innings, highlighted by an RBI single from Yohann Dessureault in the third. The fifth inning became the turning point, as Apple doubled and Dessureault reached on an error, loading the bases for Hylton. He delivered a grand slam to left field, bringing home four runs and energizing both the team and the home crowd.
Stetson continued to hit in the later innings. Dessureault homered in the eighth for a solo shot, and Hylton followed with a two-run home run, further padding the Hatters' lead. Stetson also showcased its speed on the basepaths, swiping five bags as a team, with De la Cruz and Corey Robinson each stealing two.
Ethan Phillips delivered a strong start on the mound, pitching five shutout innings, giving up just two hits and striking out four. The bullpen worked effectively to navigate the remaining innings, holding off a late Fordham surge.

The Hatters broke through in the fifth inning with a four-run surge. Sean Griggs was hit by a pitch to start the rally, followed by a single from Jack Harley. Landon Russell delivered an RBI single to bring Griggs home, with Renzo Gonzalez following with another RBI hit. After a wild pitch moved runners into scoring position, Foster Apple singled to left field, driving in two more runs and giving Stetson a 6-4 lead.
Fordham's decisive push came in the eighth, where defensive miscues allowed three runs to score — two of them unearned — flipping the lead. The Hatters put the tying run aboard late but were unable to complete the comeback.
James Hays was strong in the start, pitching 4 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts, allowing just two earned runs and no walks. TJ Melani provided a key scoreless 1.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts, while Connor Ball contributed 2 1/3 innings. Dallis Moran was charged with the loss, surrendering the three unearned runs in the eighth.
