FORT MYERS, Fla. — Stetson carried a late lead into the final inning but came up just short on Friday night, falling 5-4 to FGCU Eagles at Swanson Stadium in the opener of ASUN conference play on the road.
Playing their first conference series away from DeLand, the Hatters (12-15, 3-4 ASUN) used a fifth-inning surge to flip the game, but FGCU (18-8, 4-3 ASUN) answered late, scoring twice in the ninth to walk it off.
FGCU struck first in the fourth inning, stringing together three consecutive hits to plate a pair of runs and take a 2-0 lead. Stetson starter James Hays limited further damage, settling in to keep the Hatters within striking distance.
That opportunity came in the fifth, when Stetson's offense broke through in a big way. After Landon Russell and Samuel Fernandez reached and moved into scoring position, FGCU elected to intentionally walk Juan De la Cruz to load the bases. Freshman Jack Harley made them pay in full, launching a towering 412-foot grand slam to turn a two-run deficit into a 4-2 Stetson advantage.
Hays delivered a steady outing, tossing five innings without issuing a walk, while the Hatters' bullpen combined to hold the lead into the late innings. FGCU chipped away in the eighth on a solo home run to cut the deficit to one, setting up a dramatic final frame.
In the ninth, the Eagles pieced together a rally, using a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly to even the score before delivering a walk-off RBI single down the right field line to secure the 5-4 victory.
Despite the result, Stetson showed resilience throughout, capitalizing on its biggest scoring opportunity and carrying a lead deep into the game against a strong conference opponent.
