DeLAND, Fla. — Stetson University defeated Georgia Southern 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The victory marked back-to-back 4-3 wins for the Hatters, who secured four singles victories after dropping the doubles point.
Georgia Southern opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Albert Saar and Edoardo Santoni edged Christian Kuehne and Marc Saura in a tiebreak on court two, while Gregoire Delattre and Davis Taylor clinched the point with another 7-6 victory over Kartik Mandla and Alexandre Verlaguet at the top spot. Stetson picked up its lone doubles win at No. 3, where Xavier Sarda Marti and James Lorenzetti defeated Matthew Mitchell and Albert Widell 7-5.
The Hatters responded quickly in singles play. Verlaguet evened the match with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Saar at No. 1 singles. Maftei followed with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win against Mitchell at No. 6 to give Stetson its first lead of the day.
Saura extended the advantage with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Santoni at No. 3 singles, putting the Hatters within one point of the team win.
Georgia Southern fought back with points on courts five and four. Widell defeated Santia Padilla Cote 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, and Taylor followed with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Lorenzetti at No. 4 to even the match at 3-3.
The deciding point came on court two, where Kuehne battled through three sets to defeat Delattre 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and clinch the match for Stetson.
