Lefèvre Posts Consistent Opening Effort At NCAA Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. -- Stetson's Matthis Lefèvre opened today's first round of the NCAA Athens Regional with a consistent effort, carding 15 pars and just one bogey en route to a 1-under par 70 at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Lefèvre finished the day in a share of 17th place. The field will return to the 7,258-yard, par 71 course tomorrow morning for the tournament's second round. Lefèvre is scheduled to start tomorrow at 10:23 a.m.  off hole no. 1. The final round is scheduled for Wednesday. Live results are available online by clicking here.

One of 75 golfers hoping to qualify for the NCAA Championships later this month at the Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, Calif, Lefèvre is one of just 10 individuals competing in the regional. The other 65 golfers are affiliated with a team qualifier.  Josiah Gilbert of Auburn, ranked 26th nationally, leads the field after today's first round with a 6-under par 65.  He was one of 16 golfers to turn in a score under 70.

Lefèvre opened the day by making par on the first two holes before dropping his only bogey of the round on the 210-yard par 3 third hole. He then rattled off a trio of pars before making a birdie on the second-longest hole on the course, the 556-yard par 5 seventh. He moved his score into the red with a birdie on the par 3 16th before settling for par to close out the round.

A native of Hossegor, France, Lefèvre became Stetson's first-ever at-large selection into the NCAA Regionals after a stellar season as the ASUN Men's Golfer of the Year. He led the team in scoring average at 70.9 and claimed three tournament titles during the season.

To advance to the NCAA Championships, Lefèvre must finish as the top individual not on one of the five advancing teams from the regional field. The NCAA Championships will be held May 29-June 3 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
