DeLAND, Fla. — Stetson men's soccer returns to ASUN action Saturday night when the Hatters travel to Jacksonville for a 7 p.m. matchup against North Florida at Hodges Stadium.

The Hatters enter the weekend at 2-5-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play after battling UCF to a 1-1 draw Tuesday night in DeLand. North Florida enters at 6-3-1 overall and 3-0 in the ASUN, setting up an important conference matchup as Stetson begins a stretch of three consecutive games away from home.

Saturday will also bring the Hatters back to a familiar venue. Stetson made two trips to Hodges Stadium last season, including a 110-minute scoreless battle with the Ospreys in the ASUN Championship semifinals.

Stetson heads back on the road after closing its season-long five-match homestand with a gritty 1-1 draw against UCF on Tuesday night.

The Hatters entered halftime trailing 1-0 before coming out of the break with renewed pressure. Stetson produced 10 of its 13 shots in the second half and eventually found its breakthrough through Matthew Perez.

Junior Essengue helped create the equalizer, picking up his team-leading second assist of the season as Perez found the back of the net for the second time this fall.

With the match level, neither side could find the deciding goal. Murillo Mello and the Stetson back line kept UCF off the board for the entire second half, with Mello finishing the night with four saves.

Stetson ultimately finished with a 13-8 advantage in shots against a UCF team that had entered the night with five shutouts in seven matches. The draw snapped a four-match losing streak to the Knights and gave the Hatters their first result in the series since 2016.

It also continued a trend that has become increasingly difficult to ignore.

Stetson has held the advantage in shots in every match dating back to its Aug. 23 draw at UTRGV.

That seven-match stretch includes a 15-12 edge at Coastal Carolina, 12-6 at Bellarmine, 12-8 against Georgia Southern, 15-6 against West Florida, 16-8 against Presbyterian, 12-5 against Queens and Tuesday's 13-8 advantage over UCF.

The Hatters have now attempted 111 shots compared to 76 by their opponents for the season. Stetson has also earned 44 corner kicks while allowing 35.

Much of that pressure has come after halftime. The Hatters have produced 67 of their 111 attempts in the second half, including 10 after the break against UCF.

Matthew Perez has continued to emerge as one of Stetson's most consistent attacking threats.

The freshman's equalizer against UCF moved him into the team lead with five points on two goals and one assist. He also leads the Hatters with 17 shots through seven appearances.

Perez recorded the first three points of his collegiate career in Stetson's 2-0 win over West Florida, scoring once and assisting on Afonso Conde's game winner. He has since remained heavily involved in the attack, producing 12 shots over his last four appearances.

His two goals are tied for the team lead alongside Conde and William Mills. Seven different Hatters have found the back of the net this season, while nine different players have recorded at least one point.

After stepping out of conference play for Tuesday's matchup with UCF, the Hatters now return to a league race that remains in its early stages.

Stetson opened ASUN play on the road at Bellarmine on Sept. 5. The Hatters controlled much of the opportunity battle, outshooting the Knights 12-6 and earning seven corner kicks, but a single Bellarmine goal proved to be the difference in a 1-0 decision.

One week later, Stetson welcomed ASUN newcomer West Florida to DeLand and broke through for its first conference victory. Conde opened the scoring before Perez added a goal of his own as the Hatters earned a 2-0 win. Stetson outshot the Argonauts 15-6 and Murillo Mello recorded his first collegiate clean sheet.

The Hatters then hosted Queens in their most recent ASUN match. Stetson again controlled the shot count, finishing with a 12-5 advantage and eight corner kicks, but the Royals found the lone goal of the night in a 1-0 decision.

That leaves Stetson at 1-2 with three conference points entering Saturday. The Hatters have outshot their three ASUN opponents 39-17 while allowing just two goals across 270 minutes.

North Florida currently occupies the top spot in the league table with nine points, giving Stetson an opportunity to pick up a valuable road result as the conference schedule moves forward.

North Florida enters Saturday at 6-3-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in ASUN play under first-year head coach Marlon Montanella.

The Ospreys stumbled out of the gate with an 0-2-1 record but have quickly changed the direction of their season. UNF has won six of its last seven matches, with its only loss during that stretch coming at No. 21 Clemson.

North Florida opened its conference schedule with a dramatic 2-1 win at Jacksonville, scoring twice in the closing minutes. The Ospreys followed with another 2-1 road victory at FGCU before returning to Hodges Stadium and defeating West Florida 3-1.

UNF has since added a 3-0 non-conference win over Trinity College of Jacksonville and enters Saturday having won back-to-back matches.

Offensively, North Florida has produced 16 goals on 142 shots while putting 58 attempts on target. The Ospreys have also earned 61 corner kicks, an average of more than six per match.

Senior midfielder Mark Romano has been at the center of the attack. Romano leads UNF with five goals and 11 points and has shown a knack for delivering late in matches.

He scored the game winner in the 89th minute against Jacksonville before striking again in the 85th minute to give the Ospreys a 2-1 win at FGCU. Romano then scored twice in the 3-1 victory over West Florida, giving him four goals across UNF's first three conference matches.

Geraldo Neto has added three goals, while Anton Khelil and Kaiss Mansouri share the team lead with three assists apiece.

Khelil entered the year as one of the most decorated returning players in the conference. The senior was named the 2025 ASUN Player of the Year and Midfielder of the Year before being selected as the 2026 ASUN Preseason Player of the Year.

North Florida also returned the reigning ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year in Luciano Natoli. The fifth-year keeper set a program single-season record with nine shutouts in 2025 while recording 60 saves and an .759 save percentage. This season, Natoli owns a 4-2-1 record with 18 saves.

Hodges Stadium has provided another advantage for the Ospreys. UNF is 3-1-1 at home this season after finishing 6-0-1 in Jacksonville a year ago, when the Ospreys outscored visiting teams 22-4.

Saturday also adds another chapter to a series that became particularly familiar last fall.

Stetson and North Florida met three times during the 2025 season. UNF took the first meeting 3-0 in Jacksonville on Oct. 11, but the Hatters answered when the teams met again in DeLand three weeks later.

With a postseason berth on the line, Stetson produced a 4-1 victory in the regular-season finale. Zsombor Pall scored twice, Daniel Makowem recorded two assists and Pall and Andres Mata combined to account for all four Hatter goals.

Nine days later, the teams met for a third time in the ASUN Championship semifinals. Stetson held the top-seeded Ospreys scoreless for 110 minutes during a frigid night at Hodges Stadium before North Florida advanced 4-3 in penalty kicks following the 0-0 draw.

North Florida went on to win the ASUN Championship and earn its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

According to North Florida's match notes, Stetson holds a 15-8-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Hatters had won three consecutive meetings from 2022 through 2024 before last season's three-match set.

Saturday brings together two teams that have consistently found ways to generate opportunities.

North Florida enters averaging 14.2 shots per match, while Stetson is producing 12.3. The difference comes at the other end of the field, where the Hatters have done an impressive job limiting opposing opportunities.

Stetson has allowed just 8.4 shots per game, compared to 9.0 allowed by North Florida. The Hatters have surrendered only 76 total attempts through nine matches, while UNF has allowed 90 through 10.

Both sides have also done much of their attacking work after halftime. Stetson has attempted 67 of its 111 shots in the second half, while North Florida has produced 75 of its 142 after the break.

That makes Saturday another test for a Stetson side that has consistently created chances and is coming off a second-half performance against UCF in which the Hatters controlled long stretches of play.
