MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore transfer Uy Doan fired a 4-under-par 68 to lead the Stetson University men's golf team through the opening round of the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate at Grande Dunes Resort Club on Sunday.
Doan is tied for sixth place in the 90-player field, three strokes behind tournament leader Ciaran Murphy of Lipscomb. Coastal Carolina's Jack Lee, last year's tournament medalist, is tied for second at 6-under with Elon's Jack Wieler.
As a team, Stetson is tied with Kennesaw State for ninth place among the 16 teams at 6-under-par. Elon leads the field at 12-under, while UTSA is second at 11-under.
Senior Simon Engman also posted a sub-par round for the Hatters, carding a 2-under-par 70 to sit tied for 23rd. Thanattasorn Supinraj is tied for 28th at 1-under, while senior Gabriel Lindahl is tied for 53rd at 1-over. Junior transfer Jack Northgraves, competing in his first tournament as a Hatter, finished at 3-over and is tied for 73rd.
Stetson was among the most consistent teams on the course, recording 63 pars during the opening round, the second-highest total in the field.
Doan, a native of Hanoi, Vietnam, transferred to Stetson after a strong freshman season at Southern Utah. Starting on the back nine, he opened his round with seven consecutive pars before recording his first birdie on the par-5 17th hole.
After four more pars, Doan caught fire with three birdies over a four-hole stretch on Nos. 4-7. He surrendered his only bogey of the day on the par-3 eighth hole but quickly bounced back, closing his round with a birdie on No. 9 to finish at 4-under-par 68.
The Hatters return to the 7,578-yard, par-72 course Monday for the second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament. The event concludes Tuesday.
