The Stetson University Cheerleading program's primary purpose is to be ambassadors to the university and support all Stetson Athletic teams. We are an all year around sport; with various home game commitments, our personal team competition schedule, as well as University and community appearances. Team members will be responsible for learning team material on their own over the summer, and the in-person season begins prior to the start of classes with camp/pre-season in August. During the fall we perform at all home football games, support each fall sports senior night competitions, and prepare for UCA Game Day nationals in January. In the winter/spring we split into smaller unit teams to perform at both men's and women's basketball, all spring sports senior nights, as well as prepare for tryouts for the next years team. Cheerleaders are responsible for attending all practices and/or games that occur during the academic year; including those that fall during University breaks/vacations and holidays.
The SU cheerleaders also have the privilege to participate in a several appearances on behalf of the University and Athletic Department. Cheerleaders are ambassadors for the school and are expected to carry themselves accordingly at all times. Each cheerleader is expected to volunteer for a variety of appearances throughout the course of the season. Stetson cheerleaders are also required to participate in team fundraising efforts throughout the season. The specific fundraisers, dates, and times will vary from season to season; but for each fundraising campaign cheerleaders will be given specific goals and deadlines and are expected to meet them. As a team we practice two-three times a week, we attend strength-and conditioning training two days a week, and have multi-sport game commitments.
Being a college cheerleader is an extremely rewarding experience, but is also extremely time consuming. In general, the Stetson Cheerleaders have a 15-20 hour a week time commitment to the team. Cheerleaders are expected to put their academics first, and cheerleading second, so time management skills are very important. Anyone interested in trying out should make sure that they are fully aware of the time commitment required and be ready to dedicate themselves accordingly.
