Stetson Falls To Drexel, Cornell

DeLand,?Fla. -- Stetson softball dropped a game to Drexel 6-2 and went on to lose to Cornell 3-1 Friday evening in the Stetson Tournament at the Stetson Softball Field.

After the Hatters (29-5) went ahead 2-1 with an RBI double by Sherilynn Wilder (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), Drexel took a 3-2 lead with an Amanda Heyser single up the middle to score two baserunners in the sixth in Stetson's first game of the day. The Dragons (7-12-2) added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh with a three-run homer by Jonnae McClain.

Sophomore Melissa Wiggins (Temple Terrace, Fla.) blasted a solo home run in the first inning for the Hatters' first run of the game.

Hatter senior Blake Hoorelbeke (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) singled to right field to score pinch runner Stacy Knight (Melbourne, Fla.) in the first inning against Cornell. The Big Red (16-6) used an RBI triple and an RBI single to add two runs in the bottom of the second to take the 2-1 lead. Kate Varde then homered to center field for the 3-1 Cornell advantage.

Junior Brittani Houghton (Ft. Myers, Fla.) suffered her first loss of the season against Drexel, allowing two earned runs off six hits while striking out three batters. Hoorelbeke fell to 16-3 against Cornell, allowing three earned runs off six hits while posting seven strikeouts.

The Hatters play again Wednesday when they travel to Daytona Beach to face cross-county rival Bethune-Cookman at Sunnyside Park in a doubleheader at 4p.m.
