Stetson Stings Alabama State 9-0

Softball Stetson University

Stetson Stings Alabama State 9-0

DeLand, Fla. ? Sophomore third baseman Megan Voeller (Jensen Beach, Fla.) went three for three at the plate to lead the Stetson softball squad (10-6) to a 9-0 five-inning victory over visiting Alabama State to close out the Hatter Invitational Sunday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.  Junior pitcher Erica Demers (Miami, Fla.) tossed a two-hit shutout to blank ASU for the second consecutive day.

Senior shortstop Lindsay Wightman (Surrey, B.C.) got the Hatters on the board with an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning, but it was not until the fourth that Stetson was able to fully take advantage of the wildness of Hornets pitcher Quayanna Forte' with eight runs.

After back-to-back singles by Voeller and sophomore center fielder Amy Joyce (Lake Mary, Fla.) to lead off the fourth inning, Wightman hit a hard shot that second baseman Tiffany Wells misplayed for an error, allowing Voeller to score from second.  Junior first baseman Andrea Migliori (Winter Garden, Fla.) then drove a long fly to right field that scored Joyce after a tag-up and junior right fielder Amanda Bailey (Destin, Fla.) followed with an RBI groundout to bring Wightman home.

After two more runs came in on RBI singles by senior left fielder Nicole Forbes (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore pinch hitter Nicole Peltz (Navarre, Fla.), Voeller rapped her second hit of the inning into right field for an RBI single.  Joyce then capped off the big inning with a two-run triple over the left fielder's head.

Voeller enjoyed her first three-hit game of the season and the third of her career, driving in a run and scoring twice.  Joyce had two hits while Forbes stole her fourth base of the year.

The day after tossing a one-hit shutout against Alabama State (1-15), Demers confounded the Hornets again.  In five innings, she gave up just two singles, walked none and struck out six.  Forte' allowed nine runs, although only two of those were earned due to a pair of errors, on nine hits and five walks.  No Hatter struck out in the ballgame.

Stetson is back in action Wednesday evening, traveling down I-95 to face former conference rival Florida Atlantic in a single game.  First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. as Jamie Bataille broadcasts the action on the official website of Stetson Athletics, www.gohatters.com.
